I want to thank you for reintroducing me to the thrill of flying. When I was a kid I made scrapbooks of airplane pictures. I read pilot biographies looking for the characteristics that make great pilots. Without exception, each had experiences that taught them self-reliance and confidence. I learned to fly at the Watsonville Airport in 1991. Most of my training was based on a repetition of a set series of predetermined steps.

I learned what to do and when to do it for landings, takeoffs and standard flight maneuvers etc. I progressed so well that I soloed in eleven and a half hours of instruction. I thought, "This is great, flying is a snap". Events took me away from flying for a few years.

I came to Shawn Kelly and Acme Aviation, a "Mechanically" competent pilot. At least in the steps I remembered. But regardless of my love of flying, I still felt a "Disconnect" between my skill level and the environment of flight. I knew what to do but not why to do it and more importantly what to change when conditions changed or I found myself at a new airport.

Shawn Kelly is that rare CFI with a gift that allows him to guide the new or experienced pilot to develop that awareness and connection to the total environment of flight. We not only fly but also spend time before and after the flight discussing the series of conditions that caused us to adjust our approach to flying that day. Shawn has taught me to understand how to think on my feet, or seat as the case may be. That is invaluable and irreplaceable part of being able to fly with confidence and enjoy the trip. I don't look at my training as series of required hours to receive a license, but rather a specialized investment into what I need to be a confident, safe and effective pilot.

It has been my pleasure to recommend Shawn Kelly to those who are just starting out. Believe me it is much easier, much more fun and less expensive to do it right the first time.
